Travel grant

What

An artist-in-residence program offers you as an artist physical space and time for development. Through a stay in an artist-in-residence program, you have the opportunity to develop your artistic practice, be inspired by a specific place, deepen your connections with a certain region or art scene, and/or build an international network.

You can apply for an artist-in-residence grant for:

  • An artist-in-residence program within or outside of Belgium with which the Department of Culture, Youth and Media does not have an agreement with.

Artist-in-residence programs without an agreement

Artists can also apply for a residency in an artist-in-residence program with which the department does not have an agreement. However, there are some conditions:

  • The artist-in-residence program must have legal personality and must effectively offer residencies.

  • If the chosen artist-in-residence program is located in the Dutch language area or in the bilingual Brussels-Capital region, the offering of residencies must be a structurally developed part of its activities.

  • The application must provide proof of selection by the artist-in-residence program.

Who is eligible

Artists from all disciplines are eligible for an artist-in-residence grant. The various artist-in-residence organizations are generally open to all disciplines. However, each residency has its own profile and area of expertise. As an artist, you must assess for yourself whether and which residency fits your profile.

What costs does an artist-in-residence grant cover

The subsidy amount for an artist-in-residence grant for a program with which the department does not have an agreement is determined based on the attached budget. The maximum amount for such a grant is 10,000 euros.

Evaluation

An application for an artist-in-residence grant is generally assessed by the relevant artist-in-residence organization, in consultation with the Department of Culture, Youth and Media.

Decision

The department decides on the allocation and amount of the artist-in-residence grants no later than two months after the final submission date.

Allocation and payment

If the artist-in-residence grant is awarded, you must mention the logo of the Flemish Community in all your communication. An artist-in-residence grant is fully paid out after signing the subsidy decision.
