About Lizards in Flux:

Having realised how our practices both differ & enrich each other, this workshop follows up our ongoing wish to bridge the physical research with the exploration of creative tools.

During two days, we will investigate how both the physical & creative aspects of movement can help performers to expand their language.

Both days will be split up between the two teachers who will be leading you through their respective practices as well as the underlying connections in between them. This will result in the exploration of a wide variety of tools including: improvisation tasks, mobility exercises, acrobatics & composition work.

We are looking forward to sharing our experience with you,
Antoni Androulakis & Brandon Lagaert

ANTONI ANDROULAKIS

Born in Belgium, Antoni Androulakis graduated from the Conservatory of Antwerp (Belgium) before entering La Manufacture (Switzerland), where he focused on choreographic research as well as creating his own teaching material.

Antoni has collaborated & performed with Alexander Vantournhout, Rakesh Sukesh, Edan Gorlicki & Adam Benjamin amongst others. Asides performing, he has been the choreographic assistant of the Company Cocoon during the creation of “Attaque” and is currently working on his last solo “Tethered”.

Eager to share his own research, he has been teaching in different countries across Europe & Central America where he aims to connect elements of floor work and acrobatics.

FLUXNESS

Having composed & decomposed my floor work practice over the past 8 years, this workshop follows up my ongoing research to develop tools that enable movement artists to expand their physicality. It will include a physical preparation which consists of a mix of mobility exercises, making our bodies ready to incorporate new information in a sustainable way.

The practice breaks down the question of: “ How to use gravity as a movement generator ? ”

Using mainly improvisation, this question will be answered through the exploration of different concepts such as:

- Becoming conscious of the use of our weight through the points of contact we create with the floor.
- Exploring the idea of being both relaxed & active; using the needed tension in order to facilitate movement while getting rid of unnecessary rigidity.
- Using our body as a holistic organism. Seeing it as a whole rather than separated, we will find ways to make our full body contributes to the movement.
- Being interested in acrobatics, I will share different elements that will be worked as movements rather than “tricks” to include them in one’s own dance.

I do not differentiate in between the way I deal with movement and how I deal with my daily life. My teaching is therefore a synthesis of my intuitive understanding of things I am actively practicing: awareness, challenge & playfulness.

BRANDON LAGAERT

Brandon (°1992, Ghent, BE) studied acting at SKI in Ghent and enrolled in the Contemporary Dance Education of the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp in 2012.

The following year, he joined Peeping Tom for the production of Vader. He is currently part of the cast of "Vader", "Moeder", "Kind", "Dido & Aeneas" and “La Visita” with which he is touring worldwide.

Apart from working with Peeping Tom, he collaborates with a wide array of artists, for example at Centre Européen de Théâtre Physique de Strasbourg, where he carries out experiments with film.

In 2015 Lagaert created his first solo named "Subdued", with this performance, he was awarded the ‘Outstanding Performer Award’ at the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition. The following year Brandon received a BILL Award for young up and coming Belgian artists, in the ‘Visual Arts’- category.

In 2019 Brandon created the performance “Doggy Rugburn” for Lithuanian dance company Aura which is currently still touring nationally. In 2021 he was invited to create for Italian dance company Equilibro Dinamico and 2022 he has created “Next Stop” with the graduating students of the Mime department of the AHK in Amsterdam.

Next to creating for the stage Lagaert has also been working in the film world, where he has choreographed for noteworthy bands such as Flavien Berger and La Jungle, commissioned by various directors and production companies such as Czar, KOKORO, Alex Orma and Marine Dricot.

In 2023 he will be working as a choreographer on various projects such as an evening length solo for Portuguese clown/actor Rui Paixão, a solo for American contortionist Marina Cherry, a new performance for Equilibrio Dinamico and an evening lenth performance for the Italian school Paolo Grassi.

LIZARDS IN SHOES

This workshop is geared towards performers with a foundation in performance; dance, circus, physical theatre,…

Over the last decade I have encountered many art-forms that were able to grasp my attention but there are only three where I am profoundly trained in being theatre, breaking and contemporary dance.

In my classes I incorporate various elements of those different styles which results in a strong physical way of working. I find it intriguing that even though these styles differ from one another there are also many similarities to find.

I’ve created concepts to connect those styles and let them flow from one into another.
There are concepts that stem from the work as a performer with Peeping Tom and others that I have developed during the work as a choreographer.

This workshop will introduce you to those concepts to spark the creativity within yourself, which can help with making and finding your own movements, phrases, qualities, characters,...

We will glide, spin, flow, melt, freeze, tick, hoover, glitch, and float.
My classes have a strong emphasis on floor-work, qualities and states.

Don't bring shoes.
Or lizards.
