Description:
Lizards in shoes is geared towards performers with a foundation in performance; dance, circus, physical theatre,…
Over the last decade I have encountered many art-forms that were able to grasp my attention but there are only three where I am profoundly trained in being theatre, breaking and contemporary dance.
In my classes I incorporate various elements of those different styles which results in a strong physical way of working. I find it intriguing that even though these styles differ from one another there are also many similarities to find.
I’ve created concepts to connect those styles and let them flow from one into another.
There are concepts that stem from the work of Peeping Tom and others that I have developed myself.
This workshop will introduce you to those concepts to spark the creativity within yourself, which can help with making and finding your own movements, phrases, qualities, characters,...
We will glide, spin, flow, melt, freeze, tick, hoover, glitch, and float.
My classes have a strong emphasis on floor-work, qualities and states.
Don't bring shoes.
Or lizards.
The build-up:
Every day will start with a communal warm-up to reduce the risk of injuries.
Example of the build-up of a 3 day workshop:
Day 1: A construction of “movement principles”. We will get to known the movement principles which will lay the foundation for the consecutive days. These principles will be taught through physical tasks.
Day 2: A de-construction of the principles. We will take the movements principles apart to look into the similarities/discrepancies with other disciplines. Later we will use the movement principles to create motivated movements with a clear pathway and goal.
Day 3: Looking into the elements. We will look deeper into the elements that build up a performance and utilise that knowledge to create our own characters with their own respective physicalities.
Disclaimer:
This workshop is open for dancers, actors, circus artists, movers and students of any art field that have an interest in being taught through a physical approach.
We do ask for a certain physical fitness to be able to sustain the long working days.
The workshop will mainly be given in English but can be alternated with French, Dutch or Portuguese if requested.
The approach:
The workshop will be build-up through tasks and guided improvisation where we steadily build upon the foundation that has been established in the first day.
Your physical vocabulary will be challenged and expanded through the many concepts that I have picked up during the work with Peeping Tom and self-experimentation.
We will delve into the creation of characters, physicality, the relation between text and movement, dramaturgy, states, presence and touch briefly upon elements such as scenography, lighting and soundscape.
The teacher:
Brandon Lagaert (1992, Ghent, BE) studied acting at SKI in Ghent while joining the break-crew Root Division and enrolled in the Contemporary Dance Education at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp in 2012.
One year later he joined Peeping Tom. Now working for 6 years with the company he’s part of the productions Vader, Moeder and Kind which have been performed over 200 times.
Apart from working with Peeping Tom, he collaborates with a wide array of artists, such as L’école de Théâtre Physique de Strasbourg, where he carries out experiments with film.
He has also been working on developing himself as an all-round artist in different disciplines, including theatre, dance, film, directing and more. This work is housed under the name Kaiho’.
After the creation of Vader, he created the performance Subdued with some of the material left unused. With this performance, he was awarded the ‘Outstanding Performer Award’ at the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition.
In 2016, Brandon received a BILL Award for young up and coming Belgian artists, in the
‘Visual Arts’-category.
Nowadays he’s busy teaching in various countries while touring with Vader, Moeder and Kind.
